Mainland Regional 21, Egg Harbor Township 6 Score at halftime: Mainland 14, EHT 6 Final records: Mainland 4-6; EHT 2-8 Rough start: Egg Harbor Township was behind the 8-ball from the opening kickoff, as Mainland’s Chris Sheldon recovered a fumble and set the Mustangs up in Eagles territory. But the EHT defense responded and held Mainland. Penalties also hurt EHT’s chances of taking a lead in the first quarter. Mainland fumbled a punt, but a flag on the Eagles forced them to punt it again. Later in the quarter, a big punt return by Spencer La Sure was brought back. Two plays later, EHT tried the hook-and-lateral play and fumbled at midfield. Finding running room: The Eagles showed very good discipline on defense through the first couple series, but with 2:21 left in the first Egg Harbor Township's Spencer La Sure outleaps Mainland defensive back Bryce Edmunds to haul in a first-half touchdown pass during the annual Thanksgiving Day rivalry game at Silver Eagle Stadium on Thursday. (Glory Days Magazine photos/Dave O’Sullivan) quarter Mainland’s Justin Walsh took a handoff right, cut back and had a huge hole to run through. He took it to the house from 50 yards out to put Mainland up 7-0. EHT’s Dupres Bolden picked off a Ty Mindish pass on Mainland’s next possession, but the Eagles’ offense sputtered and Mainland took over at its own 30. Walsh scored on a 70-yard touchdown run that was almost a mirror image of his first to push the lead to 14-0 with 7:04 left in the half. Walsh finished with 139 yards on just 10 carries. Play of the day: With the game on the verge of getting out of control, the Eagles’ offense responded. EHT put together a long drive late in the second quarter. With less than a minute to go quarterback Adam Bynum dropped back, got the protection he needed from Eric Morrison, Jonathan Ahl and Co., and lofted a fade pass into the left corner of the end zone. La Sure and Mainland DB Bryce Edmunds leaped in unison, with La Sure snatching the ball with his fingertips and maintaining control as he hit the ground. The touchdown cut the Mustangs’ lead to 14-6, and on the next kickoff EHT recovered a surprise onsides kick. But Mainland’s defense held strong and forced a turnover on downs. Mainland QB Ty Mindish took a huge hit from EHT LB Angelo Branca late in the first half, but returned to score a touchdown in the fourth quarter that sealed the win for the Mustangs. Turkey Day Tough Guy Award: This one is easy. Goes to Mainland QB Mindish. With 20 seconds left in the first half and Mainland trying to mount a scoring drive, Mindish rolled right. EHT linebacker Angelo Branca had a full head of steam and absolutely drilled Mindish. Mindish took the hit and delivered a 30-yard completion to James Brennan. Mindish was on the ground for several minutes, writhing in pain, but returned in the second half and capped the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown plunge early in the fourth quarter that salted the game away. Stat of the day: For Mainland, the win was its first away from the Mustang Corral and allowed the Mustangs to finish the season on a two-game winning streak after a 2-6 start. Also, for Mainland seniors, the win capped a perfect 4-0 record against rival EHT for their careers. Contact Dave O’Sullivan: sully@acglorydays.com; on Twitter @GDsullysays.
